All I can say is, I don’t get it. Maybe I’m not supposed to.
Regardless.
Zip’s has kind of a cult following, particularly with people from Portland. Exactly why this is I do not know, but I’ve heard stories from people living there (a couple first hand) about how they don’t have Zip’s quality burgers in Portland. Uh, hello? Wendy’s? Carl’s Jr? Jack in the Box? Frickin’ Burger King?
Yes. I know Zip’s has that tartar sauce, and very nice it is. But come on, overall there is very little to set the place apart from your average fast food joint. Take a blind taste test and you probably won’t be able to tell a Whopper apart from a Belly Buster or whatever the Zip’s equivalent is, at least not flavor wise.
Of course, the redeeming factor for Zip’s is that it’s local and its quality isn’t lower than its national ilk. In other words, if you crave a fairly average fast food burger, go with Zip’s; at least your money is kept locally.
Me, I prefer D. Lish’s, but then again, at that point we’re talking In-N-Out quality burgers.

Papa Joe is simply pure redemption. Try with grilled fresh onions, and I dare you to compare to a national chain. D.Lish? Great….Dicks? a visit to what burgers used to be…Zips…2 papa joes with onions and a large tot cannot be replicated elsewhere.

They all are different! Owners, recipes, even bread suppliers. I love the one on Sullivan and Sprague. Fresh, fast and the tarter is to die for. Best ever

The best Zip’s is by far in Deer Park. They have the most fabulous and addictive onion rings dipped in their wonderful fry sauce. Its greasy goodness at its best. Other good things to try, Butterscotch milkshake, peanut parfait, the veggie burger and the turkey bacon club! Mmmm!

Yumm. Halibut and fries. Cheeseburger and fries. Garden burger and fries. I usually order the garden burger, because sometimes fast food burgers can seem to be “mystery meat”. I appreciate that Zip’s offers the alternative. Plus grilled onions! Did I mention the fries?
Oh, the shakes. Butterscotch is my usual favorite, but they have these specials of the month. April is Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie, and it is brilliant.

OK, I LOVE Zip’s, but I have to say that the one in Airway Heights is N-A-S-T-Y!!! They are flipping expensive, the servers are rude, the portions are small, and the food is terrible. Booooooo to the Airway Heights Zip’s!!!!

Papa Joe. (period) Its fricken ham on a hamburger. Its so punny and obvious that it is brilliant. The fries are basically the best fast food fries ever. Also, Zips is home to many rare and highly entertaining arcade games from the early 80’s. It doesn’t have the cult following that In-n-Out burger does, but definitely has 2.5X the flavor.

tasteeverythingonce:
Actually Portland has “Burgerville” which edges out Carl’s most days for a premium yet fast food burger.
As for In-n-Out, after 3 years in LA I find it a clean, fresh, yet basic 50’s burger. The pure deal, but sort of sterile and plain. I’m not sure I get the cult following.
Zip’s is its own thing. Zips is sort of a working mans burger, nothing upscale. Years ago during college I spent one summer doing construction type work in Spokane. Nothing hit the spot better than Zips after a morning lifting heavy stuff. Maybe being famished makes it taste better? Something about ham on a burger, crinkle cut fries, and tarter sauce on everything works when your hungry.

A Spokanite for my growing-up years, we now live in TX. The one thing that my oldest daughter and I miss the most from Spokane is Zips Tartar Sauce. We visited Spokane earlier this month, and drove straight from the airport to Zips on Division. Argh!!! Dissapointment!! The tartar sauce recipe seems to have changed. :( Another resident Spokanite confirmed that it’s not the same taste as it once was. Alas and alack, we won’t be back :(

It’s good. I’m not from Portland but I lived there a number of years ago. Actually I’m from Texas and there’s a place called “The Longhorn” in San Antonio that rocks this world as far as Hamburgers go. I’m still in search of such a burger here in Spokane, and am taking my time sampling but haven’t found it yet. So far Zips is darn tasty, I had a “Big Zipper”. Considering I’m a little lady that was probably a tall order, but I ate it cuz I was hungry and it was good. Still its no Longhorn. As far as Portland-ites and their Burgerville.. I say WHAT??? Burgerville stinks. They do not know how to make a hamburger and they’re overpriced. I think their meat is from cows who have their karma just right or something, and therefore they probably don’t deserve being eaten. They don’t even put lettuce or tomatoes on the burgers unless you pay extra. HUH? So no Burgerville for me, but Zips is good. Now….... I must proceed along in my hunt for the Ultimate Burger of Spokane and report on it at a later date ….. :-)
