Yes :-) Jennifer's review (Apr 30th 2006)
After a twelve kilometer walk this morning with 45,000 of our closest friends, we made the trek to one of my favorite south hill eateries, Luna. Housed in a former post office, Luna is small and intimate. The restaurant was recently named Spokane’s best in Best Places Northwest. And while upscale, they didn’t balk as exhausted Bloomie after Bloomie descended upon their restaurant for brunch.
We have enjoyed brunch at Luna many times and I’ve never been disappointed. From the snow crab omelette to the croque-monsieur, every dish is made with care from fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients. The signature soup, butternut squash crab bisque, is quite possibly the world’s most perfect food. It is rich, indulgent, and full of real lump crab. If the temperature hadn’t been in the mid 60s and I wasn’t so warm from the race, I would have enjoyed my umpteen bowl of this creamy soup.
Instead, we made our way to the rose terrace and munched on cinnamon-walnut bread with sweet orange butter. Our group of six managed to eat three small loaves! Today I inhaled a simple dish of scrambled eggs, ham, and Olsen Farms roasted potatoes. I have an aversion to the smell of cooking eggs and don’t usually make them at home, so this was a special treat. Grandad slowly savored a large plate of french toast, more reminiscent of dessert than breakfast, topped with caramelized bananas and pecans. Remi enjoyed a savory meal of huevos rancheros. Refueled from the race, we left contented and happy.

Lunas diner is no secret. Its one of my favorite restaurants in Spokane. I think because it is way up on 57th I dont go there as much as I would like. With all the road construction I usually talk myself out of the trip. It may also be that since Cafe Marron opened I just prefer the short trip to Cafe Marron rather then the long trip to Luna. For those who dont know, both restaurants are owned by the same couple.
I think in a lot of ways Luna is the most imitated restaurant in Spokane. Im a huge fan of Lunas Kobe beef sirloin. Im not sure its actually from Japan but it is (in my opinion) the best steak in Spokane. I know a few people that think real (Japanese) Kobe beef is better. I cant taste a difference between the Japanese and American Kobe beef.
The breakfast is also fantastic. Ive been on a bit of a brioche hunt this summer and let me tell you Luna serves up a pretty mean brioche. Also their bacon is easily the best bacon served in all of Eastern Washington. But get there early because the only thing harder then getting Spokane Shock tickets is getting a table at Luna on Saturday or Sunday morning.
So whats the dish?: Its worth the trip just to see how Luna has impacted Spokanes restaurant scene.

We recently had dinner at Luna. The food is outstanding, and so is the service. Unfortunately, so many restaurants miss the mark on service – fortunately, Luna is not one of them. The Kobe steak is incredible. Everytime we’ve been out since dining at Luna, all we can talk about is the Kobe steak. Seriously – it is a must-try.

At one time, Luna was the standard for perfect food and service in this town. But the last few times I have been, they have badly missed the mark.
I don’t believe I will visit again for anything more than a cocktail in the lounge.
My last trip was the last straw. The salmon was overcooked and the lentils had almost a crunch. The service was very uninspired. I felt our waiter would have rather been anywhere other than taking care of us. There are too many places in town that are more than happy to make it perfect for me to spend my money at Luna.

Always a pleasure to dine at Luna, food and service the finest in town. Does anyone know where the wine steward went? Funny guy with great wine knowledge. Heard a new chef was hired, any word on that?

Luna’s has great ambiance but lacks flavor…really. Atmosphere and plate presentation are great but the taste (which is what we’re there for) falls short and at no cheap fare. It like the Emperors new clothes, seems everyone in Spokane is afraid to admit it’s really not that great.
