There’s not an abundance of Indians in Spokane, and therefore a limited Indian restaurant selection too. With that said, Taste of India has some great food so I guess it could be worse. The waiter who served us seemed to be a bit hurried, so make sure you double check the bill when you get it. There were errors in ours, though I don’t think they were trying to cheat us. Quite funny guys working there actually.
I thought the food was pretty damn good. Having a nightmare of a time trying to find actually good Asian food in Spokane, I was impressed. The Chicken Goa Curry is delish, along with some garlic naan. Mmmmmm
Just got back from Taste of India. I’ve never had an Indian meal in the US before so I was very curious to find out how it compared to back home. After I ordered my meal I was presented with the usual three bowls of mango chutney, lime pickle and spicy onions however that was it… no poppadums were forthcoming. Despite having nothing to dip in my dips I tried them all. The lime pickle and mango chutney were fine but the spicy onions were very salty. Luckily Taste of India serves Kingfisher beer in 650ml (22oz) bottles which were ideal for cleansing my salty palate!
Next up were chicken pakoras. These arrived and were fine but by this time my dips had been removed. I’d have liked a sauce with them (mint yogurt or chile?). The main course was chicken jalfraisie, plain rice and garlic nann. The jalfraisie sauce was nice, hot and very tasty with fresh coriander. The nann bread and rice were fine however the chicken itself was not the best. Normally I’d expect chicken breast but here every piece was from elsewhere on the bird. Lots of darker meat and stringy bits to contend with. I’m still recommending Taste of India as it wasn’t a bad experience but I’ve had much better.
The eggplant bartha at this restaurant is good, but other than that this place is a flop. Once I was eating there during their lunch buffet and the cook came out to refill a chicken dish. At the buffet, he dropped the serving tongs on the floor, with sauce on them, and proceeded to pick them up and put them right back onto the buffet! I was horrified! If this is what he is willing to due when he knows customers are watching, what is he doing back in the kitchen?!
When ordering the vegetable samosas, half of the time they are the wrong ones….filled with lamb. I’m glad I’m not a vegetarian! Quite the unpleasant surprise when you have taken your food as carry out and don’t realize the mistake until you get home. During the lunch buffet, they make nann by the batchful and put in in the buffet to dry. Unless you are lucky enough to be there as they are putting it out, it gets hard and gross.
As Kristine mentioned, this restaurant has substandard ideas of health codes. Stick around when it’s not busy and you can see the proprietor make all sorts of mistakes. Granted, this is probably on level with most Indian restaurants in India, but is that really what we should be comparing it to? The okra masala here does make a rare visit reasonable, however, because it is so good. Otherwise, in Spokane, at Taste of India and other places, we’re stuck with Punjabi food. Too bad we don’t have any South Indians, who really know how to cook.
I haven’t been to a great number of indian restaurant, but i’ve been to enough to have some favorites.
Taste of India was great, and their Saag Paneer is to die for (a personal favorite).
The valley location of the same name sucks! Food=poor, service=worse, spices=absent. Our opinion is that a pepper packet from McDonald’s is more worthwhile
If I was pressured to name one style of food that I like the best – It would probably be Indian. When we lived in Southern California we ate at over 100 of the areas different Indian restaurants so I think I have a pretty idea of what good Indian Food is. While Taste of India is not the best – it is VERY good. The dishes are authentic Punjabi, very well-cooked, balanced nicely and a great value.
If you enjoy good Indian food this place will not disappoint you, go enjoy.
I sense a bit of bias, here, against Punjabi style Indian food, and maybe some self-fulfilling prophecies. If one enters an Indian restaurant expecting substandard health-code adherence (maybe stemming from a pre-existing prejudice), then that may be all one is able to see in this eatery. I am a frequent customer and know the staff quite well. They are pleasant, courteous, and the place is very clean.
The food is generally exquisite, but there are some stinkers on the menu I don’t like that may be attributed to personal taste. My favorite is the Lamb Boti Masala with garlic naan and a 22 oz. Taj Mahal. My girlfriend enjoys a chai tea with her garlic naan and the Aloo Gobi Masala. I must admit that the buffet could use an overhaul as the naan does tend to dry out on slow business days, the selection is sparse, and I suspect recycled dishes on the tables.
Overall, I recommend trying the place out and trying a bit of everything until you can judge for yourself whether they have something that will bring you back.
We came during “restaurant” hours, not “buffet” hours. The food we ordered was actually good, but the waiter (could had been the owner? an older Indian man) looked very unfriendly, very sulky, downright pissed all the time. We also couldn’t understand his English well, which produced quite a few awkward moments during ordering and checking out. Even after giving him a generous tip he still didn’t manage to produce a grateful smile. His wife (I assume, Indian woman of about the same age) seemed to be more customer-friendly though, but she didn’t serve us. The restaurant itself is really poor looking inside, like some unfinished storage room with some childish painting and decor thrown on the walls to distract from overall unfinished state and somewhat messy look. I wouldn’t mind to try the food again, but remembering the service attitude and the restaurant itself (just not a really nice place to be in), I just don’t feel like going there again, ever. However if all you care is food, I’d definitely recommend to try it out, can’t say anything bad about it.
I have been (for over six years) and remain an almost weekly regular.
I love this restaurant. The lamb curry and some naan!
