A perfect example of Mexican food trying to be “authentic,” yet ends up being strangely reminiscent of what you’d get at Taco Bell. This is not a good thing. You’d actually be better off going to Taco Bell as it’s cheaper. Avoid.
It’s not cheap and it’s not perfect, but it’s not bad either. On the pro side, the service was good and some of the food was too – the amount of chicken they put in my fajita salad was astounding (and tasty) and Jay’s chile relleno was quite good too. His tamale was average at best, but tamales are hard so we cut them some slack. On the con side, it’s expensive for Mexican ($9.50 for a salad or 2 dish combo), and not perfect, food-wise…
Don’t go there expecting the best Mexican you’ve ever eaten, but if you’re around and hungry, it’s ok.
I eat at the one on 29th Avenue at Lincoln Heights, and I can testify that the food there is consistently excellent. I have traveled and eastern all through the American southwest, and the food at Casa De Oro measures up. The thing about the food there, is that it is not fancy, like too much of the food at ‘modern’ eateries is. It is basic, plentiful, and delicious. ‘Real’ Mexican food is made from several basic ingredients, using those in different ways to make different ‘dishes’. One way to judge the Mexican place is by their beans, and CDO’s beans are superb.
Most evenings and on weekends, CDO is ‘standing room only’. The waiting crowd is not delusional. Good food!
Remi got it very close, with his comparison to Taco Bell, the only difference is that the stuff you are served at Taco Bell actually tastes better than the items we were served at Casa de Oro. But let’s be fair Mexican restaurants is Spokane are in general, terrible, they have had no competition so they have trained the consumer to accept this level of food. With the amount of Californians moving here, we shall hopefully have some good restaurants opening up.
Until that time those of us who were weaned on authentic Mexican food will just have to wait.
My fiance and I stumbled on this place (the one on 29th) one day when we were craving Mexican food. We were overall impressed with our experience. We each had fajitas (as there was a special on it that day) and we both really enjoyed them. Good sized portions and friendly service. Definitely not the best Mexican food I have had in my life, but overall it was very good. We will definitely go back.
The one on 29th is just fine, forget the other two.
On 29th the food is pretty good and there is one man on the waiting staff that is very friendly and nice.
My family goes there all the time and it is not comparable to Taco Bell, which makes me ill.
