No :-( Remi's review (Apr 30th 2005)

To start on a positive note; this is probably the best location in Spokane to have a restaurant, with a view of the river, Riverfront Park, and the downtown skyline.

From there, it’s all downhill.

The garlic shrimps don’t taste like either garlic or shrimp. They are, however, overcooked and chewy, which might be ok if you like that kind of stuff. (I don’t.) Pretty much all the dishes are served with limp asparagus and rice with almonds and sultanas which I found strange. Sure, that might go well with some dishes, but not with the garlic shrimps or many of the other meals it was served with.

As a matter of fact, you can go to Red Lobster or Skipper’s for better seafood than the crap you get at Anthony’s. Avoid. Please. For me.

(Note Anthony’s has multiple locations in western Washington. The warning extends to those places too.)

Hi…I visited Anthony’s just last night (hadn’t read your review yet!)...and ordered the garlic shrimp!...THEY must’ve read your review, though..because the dish I had was delicious…shrimp very tender and tasty. I am a great garlic lover;...I would’ve added more garlic!
(and…the Falls are incredible to see right now…)

Hmmm, well I didn’t know whether to give this a yes or no recommendation. I decided on yes just because sometimes ambiance is what you go for and pay for and on that score Anthony’s is top notch. That view of the falls… yummmm. The food is distinctly average and sometimes below average, and yes it’s right that some dishes are better at Red Lobster although I haven’t had luck at Skippers and therefore avoid it like the plague.

They do have a nice wine list, the Sunday all-you-can-eat crab special is… novel and filling, and did I mention the view of the falls?

Customer service is also top notch. Our last visit, I ordered the seafood fettucine and the chef, as far as I could tell, was overzealous in getting the zest from the lemon. There was a bitter aftertaste, which I assume was lemon pith, that ruined what was otherwise an average dish. I asked the waitress about the ingredients although I wasn’t acting unhappy, just curious as to what was causing that aftertaste. She was immediately concerned. She conferred with the chef and let the manager know that I had an issue with this dish. I didn’t bother to change to another dish or accept the complimentary dessert (offered by both the waitress and the manager) so the manager gave me a card for a free dessert in the future. Handled nicely as far I was concerned, since they were clearly more upset about it than I was. But I’m not that anxious to go back to redeem that card. Maybe some drinks and appetizers on the deck would be worth it.

Great view and that’s about it. I think we’ve all grown out of that overly attentive “I’ll be your server tonight” and “Look, I’m going to memorize your order” restaurant customer service phase.

The prices are too high, sorry to say, and the food not impressive enough to warrant it. I will say that the Caesar salad was terrific and served in a very chilled bowl. That was the highlight.

Great for appetizers, drinks and the view. Walk another block or two and go to Milford’s Fish House (who, incidentally vigorously opposed allowing Anthony’s to locate there at the very beginning).

I have had the Halibut there, oven baked with a light crust, and finished with a basil cream sauce…perfect…
and the chocolate melting cake is fabulous. I love the view and complementary valet parking. Normally I don’t care for “chain restarants” but this is nice and much less than Clinkerdaggers across the river. So I say yes. I understand why Milfords objected, but they are not as good as they used to be either, IMHO.

I have been to this Anthony’s location a few times and have to say that i have never had a bad meal. Ever. I love fish and most seafood and while this may be a chain, they are darn good at what they do. Took Mom here for one of those sunset suppers, neither one of us had anything to complain about. Tender moist flavorful fish, i admit the sultanas in the rice was kind of odd, but if you don’t like them, pick them out. It’s not the end of the world people.
