The building is cool at least.

Remember the dude who ran (and lost) against Nethercutt in 2000? To show how much of a Spoanite he was, his commercials placed him outside The Milk Bottle, proclaiming that they have “great burgers! Even better shakes!” Did I mention that he lost?

I have wanted to try the place ever since seeing those ads. The building itself is enticing enough. The food, as it turned out however, leaves a little to be desired.

My burger was severely overdone, and whatever juice that at some point had been in it was long gone. The mushrooms could possibly have cured some of the dryness, but I couldn’t get over the fact that they were the canned cheap-o ones you find in the grocery store’s discount bin. You know the kind, all slimy and gross. The “great burgers” claim was quickly laid to rest.

The shake, however, was quite decent. Made from real ice cream, and pretty much anything else that can help bring on a heart attack, this is how a shake should be made. There are quite a few flavors to choose from too, though I went with the classic chocolat-y one. “Even better shakes” is a statement I can stand behind, though honestly it didn’t take a whole lot to one-up the burger.

The Milk Bottle is overall a good place to go for shakes, but not for a whole meal. That makes it difficult for me to recommend it.

Still, nice building. Hopefully somebody will at some time do something interesting with its twin structure downtown.

Although I do agree that the Milk Bottle uses their “historic nostalgia” a little too much, with less emphasis on good food, it is still a great restaurant. If you are being waited on by the owner’s family, it’s great. The other wait staff is horribly lazy and bored. The shakes are great, burgers and fries mediocre, and the house salad pretty bad.

Going to the Milk Bottle has become a bit of a family tradition for my family: Good, affordable food and great ice cream. For my nieces, it’s one of the highlights of coming to Spokane.

From what I’ve seen, they prepare most of their ingredients on sight. They make their own buns and actually peel and cut the potatoes for fries. The ice cream is made at Mary Lous in the Valley.

Recently we took out-of-town friends who travel extensively. They said it was one of the best burger joints they’d eaten at.

Great food. The burger and fries are outstanding and made fresh. Better than any burger joint around town and the prices are fantastic.

We went on Saturday and it was very crowded. But the service was quick and attentive. The burger was perfect and the fries are hand-cut. And of course the ice cream is excellent! I went with a mocha shake & my daughter & boyfriend each got something else and loved it. We were stuffed and happy and the whole thing cost just over $20!! A great place, we will be back!!
