I’ve secretly been avoiding Huckleberry’s lately. The wine guy gives me the creeps and the cheese selection seems to be going downhill. A bad vegan experience last fall is partly to blame. And with better organic selections at the regular old grocery store, I’ve been ignoring the South Hill market. I’m not stupid enough to pay for the Huckleberry’s prestige. But I was looking for something out of the ordinary this weekend and when the Rocket Market didn’t have my must have ingredient, Remi and headed down the hill. Plus, he asked, “Is the lunch situation taken care of?” This means get me food. Get me good food.
So while Remi’s cheesesteak grinder was being warmed and my scalloped potatoes were cooling down, the harried Huckleberry’s barista whipped up a hazelnut latte during the lunchtime rush. Even with a nice frothy head and organic beans roasted locally by 4 Seasons Coffee, this cup was so-so. I really expected a little more oomph; something to make me perk up and take notice. While this wasn’t the worse cup of coffee I’ve discovered while exploring Spokane’s Bean Scene, it was far from the best. Better luck next time.

While I have never had the coffee at Huckleberry’s, I do enjoy their apple-turkey sandwich, especially since it had strawberry cream cheese instead of mayo. The choice of mixed greens vs. chips is always good, though the dressing on the salad can sometimes be more oil than vinegar, which is a little bit of a downer. Any time I have had their soups at the Bistro, they are good, and the noodle salad with peanut sauce was delicious.
And aside from the bistro—you can’t beat the bulk section, especially when they have the 20% sale.
However, the wine guy is pretty creepy when it comes to the ladies. I usually just fill up my six pack of beer or grab my bottle of J. Bookwalter and shuffle away quickly.

I have been staying away from, or trying to stay away from Hucks bistro for years. All of thier food is cooked in aluminum, and the dairy is from FSA, ( a perfectly good hormone flushing accupuncture treatment went to waste in two minutes) I like it better than most DELI foods for quality, but only if I am forced with an impending blood sugar crash, do I actually eat there. There is something wrong with a store that claims to be all natural and is in fact not. Maybe they think we are not clever consumers. I just know I don’t like to be lied to about what I am about to feed my children….

I’ve had really mixed experiences eating at the Bistro at Huckleberry’s. But my overall negative impression comes from a couple of their salads—the oil tasted off. It was either old or had absorbed a chemical flavor from something else. It’s been enough for me play it safe whenever I have to grab something there—the soup is usually safe.

I’ve read the other reviews and agree that sometimes the salads can have a bit too much oil or taste a little off. Still, as a vegan in Spokane, the Bistro provides a relatively inexpensive option for me. My boyfriend and I absolutely love to get the pub burger (vegan field roast, lettuce, red onion, tomato, vegan mayo, and we add vegan cheddar) with salad. We always leave stuffed and spend around $15 for lunch. Our other favorite is the tofu scramble which comes with red potatoes and a mug of coffee for breakfast. We do try to go at slower times of the day and we tend to get better service and better food (like 10 am on a Saturday).

Alright—I had defended Huckleberry’s on this site…but I went in there a while ago and they’ve changed their menu. They got rid of the pub burger (which was my favorite), raised the prices on the tofu scramble, and got rid of many of their other vegan options. I was so bummed. I order the tofu scramble anyway and it came out cold…grrrrr. So, I have to change my smiley face to a frowny face. :(

I certainly like the IDEA behind the deli there, but the fact is the food is not great. The prices are high and the service is absolutely sucky! I have never met more snotty girls than the ones who served my meal last time I was there.

I was happy to see a natural market in Spokane when I first moved here two years ago. Unfortunately, the first sandwich I ordered at the deli contained cut up deli meat with the wrapping still attached – of course I had already paid 8 bucks for it and driven all the way to my house before I noticed. I am also disappointed to see that the South Hill deli has limited their coffee bar to one refill per customer.
