Sometimes three is better than two. A Morrison three pointer. Three day weekends. And three for sharing Sichuan takeout. Think about it. Two delicious cartons to fight over with chopsticks, or three? Three sounds good to me. Just like Gordy’s Sichuan Cafe. For Sichuan chic, Gordy’s is the place.
I was overjoyed my Mom could join us for dinner Friday night. Besides Project Spokane, it was the perfect excuse to make a takeout run to the ever popular South Hill eatery. Gordy’s is one of those places I’ve been moving up and down my “to-try” list for years. Seems Spokanites either hate the intimate Asian spot or they love it. Leslie Kelly was not a fan. Interim Spokesman-Review food writer Jane Helsel was a devotee. It is hard to define Gordy’s, and that might be the impetus for so much disagreement. Gordy’s isn’t P.F. Chang’s. It isn’t the tiny hole in the wall on Kearny St. And it isn’t Panda Express.
But it is pretty good. I can understand and appreciate what the Crafts are attempting with the crowded little space. The minimalist decor, save for an adorable letter posted near the reception desk from a seven year old questioning the logic of having a pet store and Chinese restaurant in close proximity, is clean and modern. The servers’ black t-shirts and white aprons are crisp and refreshing. The vibe is California casual, not Spokane fundamentalist.
Cosmetics aside, it comes down to the food. The three of us fought over a red chile infused container of gan pung chicken, another white box of lemon chicken, and a dose of rosemary pork. While the lemon chicken smelled overwhelming at first whiff, it was actually fresh and quite simple. Of the three dishes, it was the most palette cleansing. I’m not a fan of cooked tomato wedges, but the rest of the rosemary pork entree was delicious. Generously sized rosemary sprig were an added touch. But clearly, the most fought over dish was the gan pung chicken. The sauce was sweet and tangy and just a bit addictive. I bet the same sauce would be divine on seared scallops. Maybe next time.

YUM! I’ve been here several times and have been pleased every time! Great food, good portions, friendly staff. I love the green beans, lemon chicken and black bean chicken. I’m a real spice weenie, so I don’t get the hot stuff. Everything seems to have great flavor. I’ll definitely go back. Again, a little on the expensive side. (I’m cheap)

Gordy’s Sichuan Cafe is the best ethnic cuisine in the area. Cool space, great chef, killer staff, quality menu, and awesome specials. Show up early to make sure you get a seat, order some soup, a beer, and a special, you will be glad that you did. Last time I was there I had Smoked Pork & Edamame soup, then a red curry Chicken special, I told Gordy to make it how it should be eaten and yes, it was a 2 beer meal. I highly recommend Gordy’s, I only wish it was in Coeur d’Alene.

I have been so many times I can’t count and that says it all. Clearly the best Chinese cuisine in town! No one else even comes close IMHO.

Hands down best Chinese cuisine in town. Not the typical Chinese restaurant with same ole same ole menu. Their menu is definitely Asian, but with a unique twist that makes you want to come back and try something different. Love the dan-dan noodles and basil chicken. Great service.
