Does a neighborhood become a neighborhood when a Rocket Bakery takes root? Or does the arrival of a Rocket Bakery signal neighborhood validation? It’s hard to truly say, but either way Spokane and its many ecletic neighborhoods are well served by the Postlewaits’ modest coffee and pastry shops. In the almost fifteen years since the first Rocket opened in Millwood, the family has helped foster a sense of community throughout Spokane. In fact, it would be almost impossible to imagine parts of the Lilac City without a Rocket.Years ago Remi and I had a Saturday afternoon routine. We’d run errands all morning in the blistering heat or chilly cold and then run to the tiny corner Rocket near the Fox Theatre. Most Saturdays we’d just barely make it. Some Saturdays we’d be too late and the friendly clerk would have locked up for the afternoon. But we’d try regardless, not always sure if we’d be walking away with hot drinks and pink cookies. Although I was excited about the Fox renovations, part of me still misses that Saturday afternoon ritual.
Still there’s the landmark Rocket Market in the gas station on 43rd. So recognizable, even out-of-towners remember the place once they are long gone. It’s well worth the drive for a Sunday Seattle-Times, Israeli couscous, or pomegranate molasses. If Huckleberry’s doesn’t carry it, the Rocket Market will.

There’s the quirky Rocket on Garland where Spokane’s finest and Spokane’s artists rub shoulders. There’s the Holly Mason Rocket where urbanites and tech geeks log on. And then there’s our Rocket in Carnegie Square. Every time I discover a new Rocket I like to claim it as my own, but this one truly is.Even on a brisk October morning, runners from Browne’s Addition made a pit stop for bagels and cream cheese, young couples shared the newspaper at the window counter, and old men admired the wine selection and conversation from the back of the room. Early risers stood for the bus with their to-go cups while families tried to decide between scones and muffins. There is a reason the Rocket exists. It is more than just good coffee and tasty pastries. It is community, it is togetherness, it is living.

I love this place when you walk in the door. Like you’re right at home!

I knew it was cool when a little old lady told me it was the place to get coffee in the Garland district. She was right.

I usually get chai, not something that is entirely difficult to make, but they do a good one.

They have great pastries. Good day olds and I like it! Go there.

Even before the Rocket, there was Geoffreys, the current Rocket CEO’s first foray into the coffee/bakery scenario. Just a few short words, He rocked the valley then… and He continues to Rock the valley and all of Spokane now! I like the fact that when you go into a Rocket location, you are not only supporting a local business but you are also getting some of the best pastries in the county.

No :-( Rhonda's review (Nov 2nd 2008)

I’ve tried to like Rocket. I really have. But, I’ve come to the conclusion, I’ll drive to Rockwood on the South Hill or to Starbuck’s before I’ll stop at a Rocket for lattes or their strangely dry pastries. The bagels downtown, however, are to die for.
