Yes :-) Jennifer's review (Apr 30th 2006)
Every time I drive up Grand Boulevard by Manito I see the tiny sandwich board on the corner. I usually look over at Remi and announce we should stop in one morning for coffee and muffins. Most times, he just nods his head and concedes but nothing comes of our agreement. Until Saturday morning. We loaded up Sammy and took a quick trip up the South Hill to the Rockwood Bakery to explore the bean scene.
Rockwood is a busy place. Even though the bakery is located off the main arterial on a quiet neighborly side street, people flock to the morning hot spot. We parked the car several blocks away, immediately scooped up Sammy, and rushed to claim one of the few remaining outdoor tables. Despite the morning briskness, the patio was bustling with locals and their dogs, children, and running partners. Inside, young professional families munched on turnovers and cinnamon rolls while slowly sipping from tureens of frothy coffee. There were a few South Hill ladies-who-lunch decked out in coordinated sweat suits and hair-sprayed hair. But by Rockwood’s location alone this was to be expected. Singles quietly read books or typed away on laptops while nibbling quiche.
I stepped into the twisted line and waited until my turn to order. Sadly, my order was taken before I reached the crowded glass enclosed bakery case, so I had to blindly choose breakfast for myself, Remi, and Sammy. I choose a caramel mocha and pumpkin spice muffin to share with Sammy and a piece of sausage quiche and chai latte for Remi. I promptly made it to the register, grabbed the last metal forks, and was served our drinks. Then I waited and waited and waited. I had fallen victim to a quiche snatcher! Somewhere along the line a patron had walked away with Remi’s quiche. The Rockwood staff quickly offered me another slice and refunded half of the cost. I never expected such a gesture. It was an honest surprise.Sammy enjoyed part of my enormous pumpkin muffin. The crown was huge and flavorful but the inside was under cooked and doughy. However, the nutmeg spice was quite enjoyable. Rockwood’s coffee was pleasant and Remi thoroughly savored his large vanilla spiked chai. I can bet if Rockwood wasn’t so busy the food would have been better. As an aside, the cupcake rage hasn’t hit Spokane quite yet but I’m pretty sure when it does Rockwood will be the force behind the trend.

Funny you should mention cupcakes…they are usually our reason for visiting Rockwood bakery. As might be obvious from my previous reviews, my kids are huge factors in determining where we go..and they LOVE those kitschy little plastic rings the Rockwood sticks into their generously frosted cupcakes! They are a special treat after a day of fun at nearby Manito Park.

It’s amazing that I hadn’t gotten to the Rockwood Bakery sooner. Maybe it’s just the problem of getting my wife to try new things. But I convinced her to go, and thus we arrived on a glorious summer’s day. She had a ham & cheese croissant, and raved after every bite. She also was very impressed with her iced vanilla americano, which she simply called “perfect.”
I had a slice of the bacon, spinach and cheese quiche. The custard was just right. Geez, the slice was fantastic! I enjoyed every bite.
And the service was very good. It was busy, but the staff was right on top of things. That they know their regulars so well is also refreshing. That personal service always impresses me. We will be back. I can only wish it was open later, but that’s OK.
And we got an orange chocolate chip scone for later. It was incredible! As good of a scone as we’ve had in a while.

Yes this is yet another Spokane treasure, I love the the fact that they used an existing building in a quiet neighborhood and business is booming! close to the park so you can take your coffee for a nice walk in the park or perhaps sit outside and do some serious people watching. The cupcakes rock, but my fave is the butterscotch pecan cookie YUM. Just get there.. it’s so worth it
