For the past few weeks, I’ve been waking well before the sun peeks over the horizon. As I grow older, I’ve come to appreciate morning calmness. I can accomplish more in the brisk solitude of the early morning. By the time most people roll into work around eight, I’ve already been tinkering for a few hours.The other morning I swung into the Mad Batter Bakery on Broadway and one look convinced me I could easily live the early morning life of a baker. Inside the small open bakery, the staff was busy pulling scones and muffins from the oven, frosting cookies, and slicing brownies. The whole spectacle was beautifully orchestrated. A well oiled cliche comes to mind. Sheepishly, I interrupted the scene and was rewarded with six delicious huckleberry scones.

But because Mad Batter prepares baked goods for all of Spokane’s Thomas Hammer coffee outlets, I had to try the coffee. I’m never one to miss a Bean Scene opportunity. Within a few minutes a friendly baker produced a deliciously sweet white chocolate mocha. The double shot of espresso was just strong enough to cut the sugary chocolate. I was initially disappointed by the lack of foam, but eventually my favorite caffeine fix kicked in.Mad Batter takes custom orders of any size. Just be sure to call the night before. Friday is also buy one get one free day on all baked goods. What a great way to try all the tempting treats! But hurry, next month Mad Batter will take up residence in the old Michlitch building downtown.
