It’s the kind of place you take your wife to ask for a divorce. The wooden booths are tall and private, perfect for hushed conversations, yet public enough to avoid scenes. White tablecloths, bow ties, the head of a moose on the wall. Bread plates and curtains. Giant flower arrangements and brass railings. If nothing else, Milford’s Fish House on north Monroe screams old Spokane. And I’d come prepared.

I already knew Milford’s wasn’t going to be my kind of restaurant. So before stepping through the threshold, Remi and I agreed to approach the Spokane landmark with open minds. Judging the food and service based on its intended purpose and audience. That, after all, is what Project Spokane is all about.
Unfortunately, Milford’s was still awful. It started with microwaved to death bread and drawn butter and didn’t end until the last still bearded and severely overcooked scallop. The purchased stock and over-dressed giant romaine leaves made dinner even worse. Remi claims the red seafood chowder was delicious but a great cup of soup isn’t enough. I’d venture to say dinner at Milford’s was the worse meal I’ve eaten in ages. Minus the moose head.

Hi…Janine, here..
I love your site!
I was looking specifically for a review on Milford’s. I had not gone there for years; and then took my boyfriend there as a Valentine’s Day treat. We were not ‘dressed’ (maybe that makes a big difference?) because we were going to the Arena for a basketball event. But, going there was the worst experience…I was totally embarrassed. He lives out of town, and knows all the wonderful seafood places in Seattle and Portland, so I thought this would be a good place to show off. It was a disaster almost from the beginning…we waited a bit before having our drink order taken; waited about a half an hour before our appetizer arrived, and then waited and waited,...and waited. When we finally were acknowledged, (the barkeep told a flustered server, who, I think, had been called in to cover for someone who hadn’t showed) anyways; when the server came over, she asked to take our dessert order…to which we replied that our entree order had not even been taken. (believe me, we had tried to get their attention..I had even walked up to an employee and asked for our order to be taken.) There was total, unorganized chaos….is this the norm for Milford’s nowadays? I have gotten much better service at Applebee’s! Not a sincere apology, not a ‘hope you come back when we are less stressed’...nothing. Wimpy girl that I am, I didn’t write a letter and complain, which I should have done, but I know my boyfriend wouldn’t go back there, even for a ‘apology meal’...

Thanks… Janine

Milford’s is the place to enjoy all the best in dining out in Spokane. I recommend the panfried oysters as an appetizer. My favorite main course is tha Ahi Tuna. This meal satisfies from the moment it is placed before you. Milford’s is a great place for any occasion. I love it. Do it.

Once upon a time we dined at Milford’s and loved it. But… things have gone DOWNHILL there. The last time we went was horrible. I cannot even describe how bad it was.

We were placed in a dark corner booth where it was freezing (this was in March). All of the food was lacking, and the price was completely not worth it. I will never go back again.

Don’t waste your $100s!

Twenty years ago, I loved Milfords. However the last couple times we went there were completely terrible. I ordered scampi, which tasted freezer burned and awful. It was my 3rd choice, since they were out of my other picks. Maybe someday I will give them another chance. As soon as it snows in July.

We had friends in from out of town and wanted some good fish, so Milford’s was our choice. The decor is dark and reminds me of what I imagine the 1900’s were like. Our experience has always been great, make sure you have reservations. The owner/chief usually comes out and talks to the guests, the co-owner is the front end manager.

Our food was very well prepared, my appetizer of the pan fried oysters was done to perfection, not to much breading, yet crisp on the outside and not dried out. We all had a different fish and we were all very happy with our selection. Desserts were nothing spectacular but Cindy’s Burnt Cream is some of the best I have had.
