We sat down and devised a scheme for keeping track of our reviews. Here’s the initial entry in this new system. There are four categories to a successful dining experience (in our opinion): taste, ambience, price, and service. You either get a point for each category, or you don’t.
0 for Taste: The Honey Ginger Chicken was too dry, and even after that was fixed was still pretty bland. The Fish & Chips were a grease-pit, and the accompanying Cajun Tartar was a misnomer.
1 for Ambience: It’s a cute, stylish place, with a unique mixture of a sit-down bistro and fast-food cafe. Very cozy, especially in the midst of a strip mall.
0 for Price: It wasn’t cheap enough to warrant putting up with the poor quality of food. If it had been $6 a meal, we wouldn’t have expected as much.
.5 for Service: The staff was nice and friendly, but the unique ambience negated their service (by requiring you to go up front to order). They were fairly attentive, and quite concerned about the quality of your food, but took a long time getting it to you in the first place.
So, yes, we already broke the “either you get a star or you don’t” rule by giving Service a .5.
TOTAL: 1.5 out of 4
I typicaly visit Maggies once or twice a month and it is always a pleasant experience. The cozy, kid friendly atmosphere is a great place for our whole family to go without breaking the bank. The food is teriffic and they always serve large portions. If you’re looking for a good filling summer salad go for the Black and Blue salad. It never dissapoints, a flat iron steak with fried onions and blue cheese dressing, yum. If you’re looking for more than a salad I recommend the portobello sandwich or the Chicken pot pie. The staff is friendly and always accomidating. And my family loves the new outdoor seating section! Great addition to South Hill dining!
After an evening of swimming at Comstock, the girls and I tried Maggie’s. I was a little thrown off by the order at the counter style. But, after recieving the food, I was impressed. I had the lasagna, nice and simple with a Caesar salad. I thought the salad had too much dressing. But, that’s me. I like a Caesar with light dressing. The chicken potpies were enormous. Served under a tower of puff pastry, it was a nice twist on old school comfort food. My oldest(Felicia) opted for the quesidilla with housemade chips. Now, potato chips are usually just chips, but I loved these. A nice dark flavor and color, I could eat a huge basket. All, in all, a pleasant experience.
Up until a few weeks ago, I’d never been to Maggie’s, but now that we spend more time in that part of town, we’ve been there twice and both times were excellent. I also appreciate it when any restaurant puts an effort into kid’s dishes—our daughter enjoyed the chicken fingers and potato salad, as well as the quesadilla. She wasn’t wild about the grilled squash, but I think it may have been the grilled part and not so much the squash itself. Who knows, but my husband and I gladly ate her portion. I’m also a big fan of the Thai wrap, the salmon salad sandwich, and the roasted potatoes. My husband tried the shrimp chipotle pasta and enjoyed it—He said it seemed like the chipotle peppers were fresh. There are more things on the menu I’m wanting to try, so I know we’ll be back.
Order at the counter and pay in advance? That aside, our server was fantastic. Her laugh was contagious and the food was great (she gave credit to the chef). We will make the trip again if only for that beautiful smile.
I’ve been to Maggie’s twice and both times I’ve had a bad experience. The food was not that great and both times it made me sick later. After the first time, I thought maybe I was coming down with something, so I figured I’d give them a second try since they are close to home and a better option than Applebees. *shudder* I’ve learned my lesson. I won’t give them another chance to make me sick a third time.
Maggie’s has been one of our staples for a couple years now. Very reasonable prices for what you get. What you DO get are usually very good dishes with some really great side dishes. Yes, they can be rather inconsistent in their dishes but overall I’ve been very happy with them over the years.
My husband and I go on date night a couple of times a month and usually try a “new” place to us at least one of those times. This month it was to Maggie’s. Not knowing what we were to expect, we walked in to a very busy place; most of the tables were taken but one, so we took it. We saw a waitress around, but also saw people at a counter, then we figured it out… order at the counter, but have a waitress as well? What??? We were so confused; but that’s just us. Anyway… We gave our orders at the counter and sat back down. When we got our food, we thought it was really good. He had a steak of some sort, I had a pasta dish. Flavors were great. We both, however, walked away after eating our entire dishes and were left “wanting”. We are not large eaters, mind you, but I guess when you go out to the places we do, we get to expect a certain amount of food for the price you pay. Walking out after paying a price relative to eating in a “higher priced place”, and my husband, particularly, still hungry after consuming his entire plate of food, we were rather disappointed. We may give it another try to try another dish, but it won’t be this week…
I really wanted to fall in love with Maggie’s, the place is cute, charming and cozy. It reminds me of a casual diner / wanna be bistro. The entree’s for dinner looked enticing so I was optimistic, but then came that order-at-the-counter routine which I find utterly annoying and below the dignity of any restaurant. At least they served you your food but the number gimmick reminded me of eating a Carl’s Jr.
Now I was dining alone so I only got to taste one entree which was the Thai Chicken dish. The peanut sauce was thick and began to cloy on my palate after a while, the veggies were nicely cooked al dente and I liked the pickled ginger garnish but overall the dish was OK, but I would not order it again.
The service was adequate but strangely enough the server refilled my water but not my ice tea, maybe there are no refills on Ice tea????
I gave them a yes rating on potential and that my meal was edible, I plan to try them again and will update if I change my mind.
This place is one of the best in town for price and the overall taste of wonderful food.
My wife and I love this place. Awesome food and friendly staff.
Maggie’s has a great breakfast and a friendly staff. It’s a great addition to the South Hill.
Maggies is my favorite place to eat in Spokane. The food is great, prices are not bad, and the atmosphere is perfect. During the week it is a little quieter(I come here to study). On the weekends it is busy(I’ll come with friends). All in all this is a great place for family, friends, or a date. Thanks Maggie.
I have been to Maggies several times since they opened. The staff are always friendly and the food is good. I would catch a “special” once in awhile that was really inventive and tasty. However, I have sorta quit going there as I had to send food back several times not because of taste but because it was tepid to cold. I don’t want to scorch my mouth but the food should come to the table warm or hot. I will probably try them again because they are so close to where I live and the food has always been satisfactory.
Food here is ALWAYS good. Kids really enjoyed the kids meals. I was sincerely disappointed by the Calamari. I normally wouldn’t go to a place like this and order it, and now I know why. It was tough, not real warm, and the spice it was cooked in just didn’t impress me much…there is MUCH better in town. Normally I get a fantastic meal here, and I will not stop going here because of the meal I had recently. The staff is incredibly friendly, and VERY attentive.
