When movie stars come to Spokane to film their latest B or C (or D) movie, they more often than not end up hanging out at Far West Billiards. Word has it that Josh Hartnett played pool there while filming Mozart and the Whale, and that he also used their restroom without washing his hands. But that’s neither here nor there.

I first visited Far West on my never ending quest to find the best pub taco in town, and I have to admit that I now enjoy the place a lot.

Their fish taco makes for a quick and tasty meal, even though it is a bit greasy. I can live with that in this case though, as I don’t expect to find an authentic Mexican taco at a non Mexican bar. The overall experience might be helped along by the fairly fresh tasting guacamole that offsets the oily fish, or maybe the grease just adds a bit of flavor to the otherwise unspectacular tortilla. Whatever the reason is, I did enjoy the taco, and I can see myself ordering it again.

A good companion to the meal is Rogue’s Dead Guy Ale which, at the time of consumption, was available tap. They also have more than forty bottled beers, so odds are that you’ll find something you like.

I’ve lunched at Far West many times. They have wonderful, tasty sandwiches complete with mixed greens – no limp iceberg here. Very impressive stuff for what is primarily a pub.

Far West was the first bar I drank at legally. They definitely serve up some of the best cocktails in Spokane (Blue Spark is up there too). Sure they are a little expensive but for the quality of drinks and the atmosphere it is well worth it. It being a more “expensive” bar keeps the typical Spokane bar flies away. They definitely use quality hard alcohol (most other bars cheap out on the vodka and use nasty tasting stuff) and use fresh juice in all mixed drinks.

Also the french fries are good when you need to start sobering up at 12am.
