Yes :-) Stefan's review (Aug 4th 2006)

So a few months back I read that a bunch of guys went around Washington in an attempt to find out where the best burger was. The Onion finished in the top five. When I read the results I was a little surprised, but then again I had never been there. So what do I know?

I had assumed, incorrectly, that The Onion was some sort of local Applebees or TGI Fridays. After eating there I am happy to say I was way off.

I’m sure The Onion’s Zagat score is pretty low in the decor category. But the burger itself was pretty spectacular. I don’t agree with the young men who rated it as the fifth best burger in Washington but it certainly was good.

So what’s the dish?: Do you like crazy stuff on the wall? Do you demand strangely named entrees? If you answered yes to either of these questions then The Onion is for you and even if you answered no The Onion still probably has something you will like.

When you go to the Onion (and I do mean when, not if!) be sure to order the mozzarella sticks. I promise they are the best mozzarella sticks you will EVER eat!!! Everything I’ve had on the menu is delish, except the taco salad. In the summertime, they have a strawberry almond salad that is amazing! And for dessert, ask for the deep fried Oreos. They sound gross, but they are so good and served with chocolate sauce and whipped cream. But the dessert isn’t on the menu, so you have to ask for it.

For me, The Onion is all about the avocado burger—a entire half of an avocado atop the burger! You hardly have any room for fries after that, but the fries are pretty tasty, as is the tartar sauce. They cook the fries is soybean oil, so they aren’t QUITE so bad for you. There’s a nice variety of burgers small and large, and priced about the same as Red Robin.

However, there are a lot of other good things on the menu—the Thai pizza (used to be called Thai focaccia, I think) and anything else that uses their Thai sauce is quite good. Really, this is a good place to take people who are all going to want different things or if you’re feeling indecisive and need lots of choices. There’s pasta, salads, fish and chips, etc…

The on tap beer selection is pretty good too. A giant 24 oz. on tap Heifweizen will set you back a reasonable $5 and change.

The kid’s menu has a nice variety and the food actually has effort put into it for a reasonable price.

The only complaints I have are sometimes the service at lunchtime isn’t as good (though I haven’t been in awhile at lunch, so that may not be true anymore), and also it’s sometimes hard to find a parking spot nearby (at the downtown location, which is the one I usually go to). Other than that though, I think it’s well worth the trip.

Another note on The Onion is that you can order deep-fried Oreos if you ask for them. It is not on the menu, but it makes for an interesting treat if you really want to add a little extra blubber to your diet. If I recall, it’s served with whipped cream and chocolate sauce to dip it in. Pretty tasty, but probably good to share an order with others.

I’ve eaten at The Onion a few times now, once at the one on Division and twice at the one downtown. I have to say, I don’t get it. The last time I went, I was with my dad who was visiting…he asked what they were known for. Our waitress said “onion rings”. So, he ordered a small side of onion rings. She brought us a plate with 3 giant onion rings on it that were so greasy I couldn’t take two bites without feeling nauseous. My dad ordered some overpriced stir-fry looking dish that he was not thrilled with. I had the Epicurean mac&cheese, which was pretty good. I’ve had the deep fried oreos. When I ate them I felt like I should’ve been in line to ride the ferris wheel…they are “Fair Food” at best. I know it’s a Spokane favorite, but like I said, I just don’t get it. Maybe it’s because I’m a transplant from the East.

It is always so busy we thought we got to try it. We will not be going back. Have no idea why people go there. Everything was over priced and the hamburgers were from school cafeteria at best. What a disappointment.

No :-( Shar's review (Sep 4th 2008)

When we first moved here, we were told to go to The Onion for good hamburgers. Why? I have no clue. The hamburger consisted of a dry hard bun, small meat patty, and a dollop of a disgusting onion compost. This was their specialty burger called “The Aristrocrat”. I could hardly choke down the bun, let alone taste anything remotely close to being a hamburger. Disgusting & dry. As for the bottomless french fries, they give you approximately 5 or 6 steak fries. Then, when they deem fit, they bring you 5 or 6 more steak fries. Big whoop. And oddly enough here in Spokane they ask you if you want Tartar Sauce with your fries? What tha? News to me. I wasn’t ordering fish, so I said “no” to the Tartar sauce complete with a look of total disorientation as to why I was even asked this question. Anyhow, this horrid burger & fries was approximately $8.00 or more. Not worth it!!! Go to Zips!!!! Or even Wendys.

The only thing good we got here were the Mozzarella Sticks. Those were excellent. Next time I go (if there is a next time) it will be solely for the Mozarrella Sticks.
