It’s been called the Sucky Yucky Inn for as long as I can remember. And after actually stepping inside the Suki Yaki Inn for the first time this evening, I can begin to see why. While reasonably clean now, there are still corners of the Bernard St. Japanese restaurant that are a little seedy. The clientele, at times, is a little iffy and the bar is a bit questionable. The bathroom has definitely seen better days.
Remi questioned my sanity once we sat down at a pink formica table with coffee shop chairs. The drunken mullet factor inside was a little more than he could take. Our service was slow but despite all the negative details, the food at Suki Yaki is pretty darn good.
We shared a plate of properly salted edamame, a rarity it seems in Spokane. We skipped sushi and split a two person family style supper of the signature suki yaki and chicken teriyaki instead. Each dish was addictively perfect. The miso soup and cucumber salad were very pleasant as well. I wanted to try their green tea ice cream, but Remi and I were never offered dessert.
I’d go back for the food or use Suki Yaki’s delivery service to eat at home. I’ll still probably call it Sucky Yucky, but just because it is a part of Spokane lore.

I agree on the atmosphere, kind of a dump. However, when I’ve had sushi there, I’ve been impressed. The fish was fresh tasting and I like more fish than rice on my nigiri sushi, so I was pleased at the portions.

The fish here has made me sick more than once (I thought it may have been a fluke) and a friend got hair in her food. I would stay away from that place if I were you.

Go figure…how anyone could like this place is beyond me. Maybe after a few sakes it seems better.
I can’t believe this restaurant stays in business. Stick with the drinks and leave the sushi to someone else. Yuck!!!

We have been going to Suki Yaki since 1991, and it remains one of our favorite places. It looks like a dump. The bar is a dark hole-in-the-wall, the bathrooms are in severe need of a remodel. There is a reason a place like Suki Yaki survives for so many years with such a loyal clientele. Their fish is fresh and delectable, sliced in large, tasty pieces over perfect rice, or in a roll. Just tell them what you would like to try, and they are happy to create it for you. The staff are friendly and call you by name, remembering your favorite libation. The funky atmosphere only adds to the experience.
We go to Suki Yaki about once a month, would go weekly if we had the time. Amy and her staff have got it right, and we can’t wait to go again!

Once I started eating lunch here I couldn’t stop. Yes the place isn’t much to look at, but the Suki Yaki is about the food, and thats what keeps me coming back every week.
