Hemp Oil Vs Cannabis Oil- What is the difference?
This is a common question one always asks – is Hemp oil the same as Cannabis Oil? The answer is no! It goes a long way in suggesting how much more we need to know about this wonder plant.
To be able to make this simpler to understand, we’ll first discuss both these plants individually and then move on to how their composition, their texture, their chemical properties differ from one another.
Knowing your Plant
These two differ from each other right from their physical appearance, and even though they originate from the same mother plant Cannabis Sativa, there are certain stark differences in their appearance.
- The non-psychoactive plant grows up to 15 feet tall whereas /marijuana rarely exceeds 5 feet in height.
- This plant has long sturdy stalks whereas marijuana grows more towards the outside with more flowers, leaves, and buds.
- The plants grow together as a unit, closely packed with each other whereas the marijuana plant needs individual space to grow.
Chemical difference between Both
The main difference between the two is in their Cannabinoids. Although there are close to 400 Cannabinoids in hemp and cannabis, the two main ones are Tetrahydrocannabinol, popularly known as THC and Cannabidiol (CBD), present naturally in varying proportions. These are 2 of the most active and most studied chemicals.
Understanding these two chemicals properly will decide how well you can differentiate between the two extracts.
THC is the psychoactive compound found in Marijuana that promotes the recreational aspect of the plant. Hemp extract has hardly any THC content in it, with roughly about 0.05-1% average content.
On the other hand, Cannabis flowers are known to contain about 10-15% THC levels on an average. THC being in a higher proportion is responsible for getting you “high.”
Now, the other chemical compound, Cannabidiol, present in both plants, occurs in a much larger quantity in Hemp than the average Marijuana plant, containing about 18-27% CBD in the former and about 10-15% in the latter.
What are these Oils used for?
Hemp extracts which has a high CBD proportion in comparison to marijuana extract is known for its wellness benefits which have attracted a lot of attention from researchers and scientists on how it can improve one’s well-being. The Oil, because of its natural tendencies, is also used as cooking agent, for massage and for other therapeutic benefits.
Cannabis extract, because of a higher proportion of THC, is known for its psychoactive nature and is most widely known for its recreational benefits.
The difference between Hemp and CBD is mostly to do with their chemical compositions, and it will be a long time before one can discover the full potential of this plant. The world is now recognizing the benefits of CBD and is actively working towards producing strains of cannabis that can help solve many medical barriers and create a more natural remedy for diseases.
